On our third visit to Vietnam we decided we wanted to visit another destination, inland from the coast to show us another part of the country. We chose Da Lat, known as the Paris of Vietnam and famous as a honeymoon destination and as the flower city of Vietnam. It is also popular as a destination for young back-packers to try climbing, rafting, trecking & canyoning. The city was popular with French residents who escaped the heat of Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) for the hills and cooler weather of Da Lat.

We flew from Ho Chi Minh and took a Mai Linh taxi the 30km to Da Lat city we agreed the price and paid in advance choosing a larger car for comfort and the price was around £6. The scenery on the drive to the city is spectacular and you are immediately greeted on arrival by the sight of the huge lake and the flowers everywhere.

Da Lat is the centre of the wine producing area, coffee growing and also vegetables and flowers. It is worth taking a trip out of the city to see some of the stunning countryside close to the city. Taxis are cheap, stick to reputable companies like Mai Linh and they are great for crossing over the city.

Restaurants

Goc Ha Thanh, 51 Đường Trương Công Định, was recommended in guide books and on line and did not disappoint, we went twice during our stay and the food was excellent, lovely service and incredible value.

V Café, 1/1 Đường Bùi Thị Xuân, we sought this out after a day exploring the city and had a light lunch and a beer but were so impressed with the service and décor that we came back for dinner. The menu is a mix of Vietnamese and European dishes, all very well done and lovely service and great value. There is often live music at night.

Le Chalet, 6 Đường Huỳnh Thúc Kháng, this is opposite the Crazy House one of Da Lat’s most popular attractions. We visited for lunch and loved the food, the atmosphere and the service, we were so impressed that we returned for dinner and sat on the terrace as there was live music inside and it was very busy.

There are a number of bars around the city, some very loud and packed with a mix of young locals and young visitors. We found some really good places to have a drink both before and after dinner.

Bars & Cafes

Woody Classic Bar, 49A Đường Trương Công Định, was our favourite bar with a great happy hour from 4pm to 7pm on beers. They had a good music playing, friendly service and good prices for beers, cocktails and spirits.

Moi Craft Beer, Đường Trương Công Định, is next door to Woody’s and just before Goc Ha Thanh, they also have a Happy Hour on Craft Beers and have wine and cocktails but more pricey.

The Maze Bar, (110 Roofs), 57 Phan Bội Châu, is close to the main market and is probably the most unique bar I have ever visited. It is a bar which is inside the maze structure on many levels which you can explore, it is like being inside the Lord of the Rings, a must for a visit.

Escape Bar, 18 Phan Bội Châu, is in the basement of the Muong Thanh Hotel, close to V Café, is open from 4pm to midnight with Happy Hour from 4pm to 7pm but the highlight is the live music from about 9pm, the resident band playing blues, rock, and everything else are top notch. Excellent comfortable venue, great service and reasonably priced.

Drink

There is a real mix of places which you would expect in a city which attracts a mix of visitors, some of the bars are just too loud and young but others like Woody are excellent. Beer is popular with Saigon Red and Saigon Green the most common but craft beers are becoming more and more popular everywhere in Vietnam.

Da Lat is the home to Vietnam’s wine producers and there are many wine shops around the city, if you get a better one it is like an average table wine. Depending on price we either drank local wine or imported wines mainly from Australia, Chile and France. Wine is not always available in bars and often if they do sell wine it is only local red. Imported wine is not ridiculously expensive considering the duty.

Coffee produced mainly locally is a major drink as you would expect from the second largest coffee producing country and there are always cafes to relax in with an iced coffee, very popular, or a regular coffee.

The lake area is beautiful to wander around, or even take out a pedalo boat and explore more of the lake. There is a huge flower garden near the far end of the lake which has a small entry fee and is worth a visit.

Crazy House, is a “Gaudi-ish” building that attracts loads of visitors to the city to explore the ever increasing structure, the attendants are dressed in what looks like Harry Potter uniforms and the queues testify to the popularity.

The night market is worth a visit with some great food stalls and also the usual range of souvenirs to buy.

There is a vintage train which runs several times a day but only if there are more than 16 passengers, the station building is fascinating, there is a small entrance fee, a café and a chocolate shop. Try and take the train, buy VIP carriage tickets about £4 return, the journey is through the flower & vegetable producing farms to the small town of Trai Mat, the highlight there is the amazing Linh Phuoc Pagoda, amazing just doesn’t do the buildings justice they are something else and a must on a visit to Da Lat.

Da Nang is one of Vietnam’s largest cities and it’s fastest growing and is the centre of the country’s high tech industry. Placed almost mid way between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh it is rapidly becoming a top tourist destination for Asian visitors due to the miles of unspoilt beach. Large resort hotels are shooting up down the coats just south of the city towards Hoi An.

There is not a huge amount to see in the city but it has a great setting on the Han Rover and there are several spectacular bridges including the Dragon Bridge which spouts flames on Saturday & Sunday nights. There is a lot to see near Da Nang such as the Ba Na Hills park and the towns of Hoi An and Hue.

Given the heat of the city we used taxis, very cheap, to the beach and to restaurants near the river.

Restaurants

Fat Fish, 439 Đường Trần Hưng Đạo, on the banks of the river near the dragon bridge, we loved the food and the service, really top notch as you would expect from the owners Vietnamese, English and with links to the chef/owner of Mango Mango and other top places in Hoi An.

Bep Hen, 47 Lê Hồng Phong, was close to our hotel and I had read excellent reports, it is small and quirky very much a locals places in the main but welcoming, excellent food and incredible value.

Tamarind Tree, Mỹ Khê 4, is in a small street about five minutes walk from Da Nang city beach. We were so pleased that we made the effort to find it as the service and food was excellent, and had we been staying longer in the city we would have returned. Great value for food and drink and the level of service.

N’om Bistro,Lot 01-A4 Zone of the Villas of Green Island, is situated on an island in the river beside the Mercure Hotel, the building is designed like a Vietnamese fishing pot and we had heard good reports. The starter was excellent but our choices of mains disappointed but it is worth a visit.

Bars

Bamboo Bar 2, 216 Bạch Đằng, Phước Ninh, is one of many bars along this stretch of the river bank, it is the best of a bunch in a street known as pub street, it has tables outside, cheap drinks and is well run, you can also see the Dragon Bridge from the outside tables. There are also some roof top bars nearby with spectacular views.

7 Bridges Brewing Company, 493 Đường Trần Hưng Đạo, this bar is part of a micro brewery and has many craft beers. It has a roof terrace for good views of the river, and friendly service.

Drink

There is a real mix of places which you would expect in a thriving city and they attract locals, expats and visitors. There are loud “Pub” bars, craft beer bars, roof top classy bars and loads of beach side bars. Beer is the most popular drink both local traditional beers and new craft beers with cocktails a firm favourite.

For wine drinkers depending on price there is either local wine or imported wines mainly from Australia, Chile and France but wine is not always available in bars.

Coffee is a major drink as you would expect from the second largest coffee producing country and there are always cafes to relax in with an iced coffee, very popular, or a regular coffee.

We chose Hue as it was the old Imperial Capital and the location of the famous Citadel or Imperial City, it also broke up the overnight train journeys from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi. For information on train and flights look at the Ho Chi Minh city page. Hue is also supposed to be the culinary capital of Vietnam.

What we did not realise was that the Australian backpackers had got there first, so the town is not just full of culture seekers. It does however mean some lively bar life and what seems to be a very laid back attitude to closing times. It can be very wet in Hue and not always that warm. There is a beach nearby which seems popular for trips.

If you arrive at the station or I would imagine the airport look for a taxi from a reputable company, we used Mai Linh when we were there. In town there are however loads of cyclos and motorbikes trying to attract passengers, perhaps if the weather had been better we might have been tempted.

Restaurants

Hoa Vien Garden Restaurant, 11 Vo Thi Sau St, is popular with tour groups however do not be put off the food is excellent. It has a lovely garden terrace and excellent service and really good value for the quality.

Golden Rice Restaurant, 40 Pham Ngu Lao St, is owned by a lovely lady, the food was super, do try one of the hotpot dishes, incredible value for two courses each and beers.

La Carambole, 19 Pham Ngu Lao St, this is French and Vietnamese so if you are craving a change from noodles then this is the place for a steak. It also does cheese and meat platters and very reasonably priced wine. Booking required as it always seems to be packed. More expensive than some but by European standards incredibly reasonable.

Khuyen Trang Café, 40 Nguyen Tri Phuong, is in the midst of the backpacker area if you can put up with the family member who tries to sell you pictures then you can eat very well and incredibly cheaply, seems popular with regulars.

Bars

DMZ Bar, 60 Le Loi St, is a very lively bar, with food and music and the occasional dancing, it seems to shuts when the last customer leaves. Really friendly staff help make it a fun place. Has a travel agents if you need to book tickets.

Why Not Bar, 21 D Vo Thi Sau, has an excellent terrace, cocktails and food, also a pool table which attracts the backpackers as does happy hour !

Hue Backpackers, 10 D Pham Ngu Lao, this is a hostel, travel agents and bar, with food and if needed does good rolls for taking away for your onward journey.

Café on Thu Wheels, 10/2 D Nguyen Tri Phuong, is in the heart of the backpackers streets, does tours and sells very cheap beers, really nice staff and owners.

Almost next door to the above is a very smart bar called Liberty, great music and nice owners, sadly not very busy the night we were there, possibly too early.

Drink

Anything and everything in Hue is probably the answer, as you will have read above the city is full of young back packers doing Vietnam, this means there are loads of bars of all sorts. There is cheap Vietnamese beer, wine, cocktails and spirits and a really relaxed feel.

As mentioned in pages on other cities in Vietnam, there is local wine called Dalat, which if you get the more expensive ones is drinkable and also a wide range of imported wines.

It must have been staggering before the bombing as only a small percentage of them are left but those are amazing. Do make sure you don’t miss the Hung Mieu and Dien Tho buildings, these are not well signed but are wonderful.

Dong Ba Market, worth exploring particularly if you are looking for one of the Vietnamese conical hats.

Ho Chi Minh Museum, the man went to school in Hue and the museum is worth a quick visit to see photos of past times in Hue.

Thuan Gallery, 24 Chu Van An & 56 Le Loi has some lovely paintings which are very reasonable and which he will roll up to make it easy transporting them.

Arriving at Ho Chi Minh City airport beware of taxi scams and use taxis from two reputable companies Vinasun or Mailinh. You may have to pay the airport toll which was less than £1. You can arrange a pick up with your hotel and there is also a bus service to near Ben Thanh market.

During your stay hotels will arrange taxis and if you hail one use one of the reputable companies mentioned above. The centre of the city is currently being disrupted with the construction of a subway system but it is still relatively easy to navigate your way around.

Be prepared for two things the noise, which is constant partly because of the millions of motorbikes on the roads which leads onto the other thing, crossing the road. There is never a good time, so start crossing when most of the traffic is at red, keep crossing in a straight line, do not hesitate or stop because they will drive round you, believe me it works, after the first time you will feel like a local.

Internal flights can be booked with JetStar and Vietnam Airlines. Check prices as although we prefer JetStar there were occasions when Vietnam Airlines was the cheapest option.

There are overnight sleeper services that go from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi and vice versa known as the Reunification Express. The journey from HCMC to Danang for Hoi An takes about 16 hours and to Hue the old imperial capital around 18 hours. The journey on from Hue to Hanoi about 14 hours. The trains have some compartments with 4 berths and European toilets. They are safe and incredibly cheap and save you a night’s hotel costs. The coastal scenery between Danang and Hue is stunning and there are other stretches where the rural Vietnam scenes are lovely to see.

We had mainly Vietnamese as fellow passengers and had no issues, but noticed far more western passengers than on our first visit six ago. There was lots of food to buy from staff on the train and also at stations where we stopped, if you could work out how long the stop was. You can always take a picnic. We booked our tickets on line before we left and received Etickets, we used Baolau who were very efficient. They are recommended by Lonely Planet and Man in Seat 61, the rail travel guru.

As usual check the web sites www.booking.com and www.hotels.com, we have always stayed near Ben Thanh market which is handy for both the back packing area with its selection of bars and places to eat and the more upmarket area around Pasteur Street.

On our most recent visit we stayed in the same area and chose the Sanouva Hotel, www.sanouvahotel.com and were very impressed with the service, staff and rooms. This was the best choice from any of our visits to the city and would definitely chose to stay there on a return visit.

Hotels in Vietnam often have rooms without external windows, pay a bit more for an external room, they also include breakfast in room rates and offer a choice of Western and Vietnamese dishes.

Restaurants

Don Khoi Area

Ben Thanh Street Food Market, 26-30 Thu Khoa Hian, is just as it says a market of various stalls doing street food. OK it is more expensive than the street stalls but the quality is good, the place well run and it is still cheap. Various options for beer and cocktails also on offer, the stall selling beers at the front of the market is excellent, cheap and a big choice.

Propaganda, 21 Han Thuyen, is a very cool Vietnamese Bistro, we loved the atmosphere and the food. It is very popular, you may have to wait at the bar for a table but the service is excellent and will give you time to enjoy the setting.

Cocotte, 136/11 La Thanh Ton, is in a small alley of the street, close to Ben Thanh Market. We found this on our most recent visit and loved the place, it is primarily a French restaurant, but is open all day and is great for a beer or some very reasonably priced wine. The food is very good but the stars are the lovely staff. Worth seeking out.

Bep Me In, 136/9 Lê Thánh Tôn, is next door to Cocotte and I had read great reports before our most recent trip, we went on the first evening and loved the place and the food. Totally understand the excellent reviews and it is popular so be prepared to wait for a table at busy times.

Nha Hang Ngon, 160 Pasteur Street, is very popular and is set up with various cooking stalls around the courtyard where you can see what is being cooked, there is a huge menu with pictures and English descriptions. The building is beautiful, the food was good and like all of Vietnam incredibly cheap. Great to return and enjoy as much as on our first visit.

Temple Club, 29 D Ton That Thiep, is highly rated and we tried the set lunch on our first visit and this time booked dinner. It was excellent, a lovely setting, very good food and lovely service.

Rice Field, 75 Hồ Tùng Mậu, is five minutes away from Temple Club and close to the Saigon Skydeck, it is owned by the same people as the Secret Garden, we booked in advance but not always needed depending on what time you visit. We loved the food, the service was fine not outstanding but the food made us keen to return.

Pham Ngu Lao

Secret House, by Secret Garden, 55/1 Le Thi Hong Gam Street, near the fine arts musuem. We had read good reports and booked for dinner, the setting is lovely and the food was very good, sadly it was rather quiet the night we visited although we were perhaps eating later most. There is a lovely small coffe place next door which does ace cocktails in the evening.

Bars & Cafes

Most smart bars used by ex-pats have happy hours so are worth seeking out. There are lots of good places for coffees, one common chain is the Highland Coffee Company although once you get away from the Don Khoi area these sorts of places become less and less frequent. Lots of cafes have fabulous fresh fruit juices and smoothies.

Don Khoi Area

Cocotte, see above, great for a beer or wine outside the main lunch and dinner times. They now have a wine bar upstairs called Bar A Vin, it has a small terrace and is worth a visit.

Pasteur Street Brewing Company, 144 Pasteur Street, the best known craft beer in Vietnam, started in HCM and is now available in many good bars and restaurants. They have a couple of bars in the same building, the beer is not cheap compared with standadrd Vietnamese beers but worth trying.

Phattys, 46-48 D Ton That Thiep, a sports bar doing food, very popular again with an ex-pat crowd and visiting Australians catching up on sport.

De Tham & Pham Ngu Lao

Winking Seal, 50 Dang Thi Nhu, we came across this by chance and found a lovely friendly bar with its own craft beer and doing a wide range of excellent looking food.

Air 360, 136-138 Lê Thị Hồng Gấm, 22nd Floor roof top bar with happy hour between 5pm & 8pm, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit, service was good and prices very reasonable at Happy Hour.

Drink

The bar life is different from Hanoi, there is a more relaxed atmosphere and in some areas stay open later. The city has much more of an obvious ex-pat and possibly a larger backpacking scene and the main area Pham Ngu Lao is full of bars, cheap eating places and travel agents.

There is a huge mix of places, some frankly totally unappealing, some fine and some very smart. The bars have a variety of beers, spirits, wine and cocktails but beware of some cheap spirits. There are less corner bars with Bia Hoi, the unpasteurized draught beer with a low alcohol content so common in Hanoi.

Craft Beer has become big business in Vietnam, HCM’s Pasteur Street was one of the first but there are now many others in most cities in the country and are popular in restaurants and bars.

Vietnam does produce wine called Dalat, which if you get a better one is like an average table wine, we stuck to imported wines mainly from Australia, Chile and France in restaurants or beer. Imported wine is not ridiculously expensive considering the duty.

Coffee is also a major drink as you would expect from the second largest coffee producing country and there are some lovely cafes to relax in with an iced coffee, very popular, or a regular coffee.

There is a very good free English language magazine called the Word that had loads of information on places to eat and drink.

The War Remnants Musuem is a must, although very busy it is still easy to see the exhibits, there are some harrowing pictures but to understand Vietnam’s history it is a must.

Old Saigon, start at the 23/9 Park and there are walking routes that will take in the main sites starting with Ben Thanh Market, Municipal Theatre or Opera House, Continental Hotel, Notre Dame Cathedral and the Reunification Palace.

Take a taxi, quite a long way to Cholon, Chinatown, start with the Binh Tay Market, then wander the streets taking in three of the outstanding pagodas, the Quan Am, the Thien Hau and the Khanh Van Nam.

If you haven’t had enough Pagodas then in the Da Kao area the Jade Emperor Pagoda is worth the short taxi ride.

There is a night market just beside Ben Thanh Market, don’t be afraid to bargain, get an idea of prices in the main market first.

Hanoi airport is 35km north of the city, there are less international flights than Ho Chi Minh but there are numerous connections via places such as Singapore as well as internal flights. Beware of taxi scams and use official companies such as Mai Linh and Vinasun or arrange a transfer with your hotel, our one cost slightly more than a taxi but cut out the hassle. There are also airport buses run by both Jetstar and Vietnam Airlines.

If you arrive early morning at the rail station you may find it difficult to get any taxi to take you to the old quarter using their meters, instead agree a price.

Taxis are cheap if you need to go to places not in walking distance but use reputable companies, check with your hotel. Look out for scams where dodgy companies set up with names one letter different and one number different in the phone number from the reputable one. Even with reputable ones who have to use meters they may and try and charge you some other figure on the meter panel but just say no and point out that you know what the price is. Also some of the less reputable companies have meters which run so fast you pay almost double the correct fare.

Hanoi can be cold and misty depending on the time of year, but do not let that put you off, for me it added to the charm of the city, particularly first thing in the morning near any of the numerous lakes in the city. If you want to feel part of the real Hanoi then I would recommend staying in the Old Quarter, there are many boutique hotels, see the hotel section for a recommendation, and it is full of places to eat and in easy distance of most of the major sites.

For information about internal flights and train travel between cities check out the travel section on the Ho Chi Minh City page.

We stayed there on our first visit to Hanoi and were incredibly impressed by the service, so much so that we have been recommending it to friends visiting Hanoi since then and all of them have loved the experience.

We stayed there for a third time on our most recent visit and as ever from start to finish the stay was fantastic, the staff do everything possible to make your stay memorable from the minute you arrive until your departure.

The restaurant is excellent and deserves it’s high rating on review sites, we are not usually fans of hotel restaurants but we would happily make an exception for The Essence. It is great that it is in the heart of The Old Quarter with all the lively bars, restaurants and street life and yet you step inside the hotel and find an oasis of calm.

The hotel can arrange trips to Halong Bay, not to be missed, and to other places including Sapa.

Restaurants

Old Quarter

Duong’s 2, 101 May May St., we have visited before and on our return this time it was a must, the food and service was excellent, it is not the cheapest option but well worth it but booking is advised.

Green Farm, 44B Dao Duy Tu, a good choice in this area where there are so many options, good service and reasonably priced.

Green Tangerine, 48 Hàng Bè, Hàng Bạc, having read good reports about the restaurant we decided to try it for lunch, the setting is lovely and the service top notch, the set menu available at lunch time is a great chance to try the cooking.

Essence Hotel Restaurant, 22 Ta Hien St., staying at the hotel we know the great service level and the quality of food, deserves it’s high rating, booking recommended.

Quan Com Pho Co, 16 Nguyễn Siêu, a locals haunt, they choose from the buffet style counter, but for visitors there is a menu and all the dishes are freshly cooked, really good food and incredibly cheap.

New Day, 72 Phố Mã Mây, cheap and cheerful, just wanting something quick one evening we gave it a try and enjoyed the dishes we chose, they also offer a range of set menus but we stuck to dishes from the extensive menu which come in a variety of sizes.

Quan Bia Minh, 7A Đinh Liệt, we went on our first visit to Hanoi and not sure why we haven’t been back since as the first floor terrace is a great place to watch the activity in the street below and the food is good and cheap, now a definite for future visits.

Net Hue, 198 Hang Bong & 153 Lang Ha, think there may be more branches but not sure, the first one is in the old quarter, the latter nearer the station. We went to the one near the station and sat in the lovely garden, enjoyed the food but the menu was fairly limited. Will try the other one as it was recommended by a local friend.

T’Art, 46B Bat Dan, was an accidental find, after sampling some street food at a nearby Bia Hoi bar we were looking for a couple of small dishes and the restaurant looked like a relaxing refuge from the hectic street. We shared some small dishes and were impressed by the high quality of both the food and the service.

Family Restaurant, 39B Hàng Hành, came across this place in a small lane and liked the look so gave it a try. Small friendly place with good food at very reasonable prices, totally understand the good comments that I later read.

West of the Old Quarter

Old Hanoi, 4 Phố Tôn Thất Thiệp, famed for Gordon Ramsey’s visit, but don’t let that put you off, this is a lovely restaurant in a wonderful original building. The food was good and the service attentive, we went at lunchtime and there was a lack of atmosphere therefore suggest trying for dinner.

South of the Old Quarter

Chim Sao, 65 Ngõ Huế, we decided to try after exploring the area south of the old quarter, it has a great reputation with locals and we really enjoyed the food, it has a number of different dishes from Northern Vietnam, worth seeking out.

Around Hoan Kiem Lake

Cau Go Vietnamese Restaurant, 73 Cau Go Street, overlooks the lake and is in the same building as a number of other restaurants all under the “Avalon Group” umbrella. We were going to try the Chinese dim sum restaurant on the ground floor but it was full and were directed to Cau Go on the 4th/5th Floor, the setting is spectacular and we enjoyed the food but the service as mentioned by many reviewers was poor. Still think it is worth it for the views and food.

Bars

Old Quarter

Bars shut at 12 midnight during the week but now stay open later at weekends, the Anti Fun police as they have been christened still keep an eye on this but things seem more relaxed these days, talking to ex-pat residents there are obviously places where you can go, apparently especially if you like karaoke

Bia Hoi is Vietnam’s draught beer and there are very cheap Bia Hoi Bars on most street corners, there were a couple at the junction of Ta Hien St and Luong Ngoc Quyen, but they seem to be more tourist beer bars, you may have to go a bit further afield to find genuine local ones, the best being where P.Nha Hoa meets P.Duong Thanh on the western edge of the old quarter.

Ta Hien Street just north of The essence Hotel is packed with bars, since our last visit some of our old haunts have gone and new ones opened up, there are many in the street which are not particularly attractive and also at a certain age you do look for ones that don’t just have low plastic stools as seating.

The Hill Station, 2T Ta Hien, was a wonderful find, this lovely cool bar does great beer, wine and cocktails also tapas. The drinks are very reasonably priced especially at Happy Hour, their cocktails using rice wine are lovely especially the one called Mountain Medicine. Their started in Sapa where they have a bar, restaurant and hotel and also have a place in Hoi An.

Fat Cat 25 Ta Hien, fits the bill with some high bar stools, ok beers and other drinks.

Xupito, 37 Lương Ngọc Quyến, is just round the corner, again high seat, nice staff and some decent food.

Cong Cafe, 54 Phố Mã Mây, is part of a chain of cafes and we loved the style of them, as well as coffee they sell beer and this one does a very good Gin & Tonic, a great relaxing place away from the madness of the streets.

Hanoi Taco Bar, 13A Đào Duy Từ,is a Mexican restaurant but also serves some really good cocktails, definitely worth a visit.

Lalang Cafe, 85 Hang Buom, is a good place to stop for a beer with outside seating good for people watching.

Nola Cafe, 89 Phố Mã Mây, not the easiest place to find, this quirky cafe bar was pleasant but very quiet when we visited.

Legends Beer, P Nyguen Tuan, on the second floor of a building also housing others bars, restaurants and cafes, overlooking Hoan Kiem Lake. The terrace gives you a great views over the lake.

Polite & Co, 5b Ngõ Bảo Khánh, was a fabulous find, a very cool bar, five minutes walk from Hoan Kiem lake the happy hour from 4pm to 8pm gives you a great chance to try their fabulous cocktails or the wines and beers on offer.

Solist, 65A Bat Dan, is at the western edge of the old quarter and is a friendly bar with a mix of customers, local and visitors. There was good live music the night we went and the staff were great.

Bar Betta, 34 Cao Bá Quát is near the Temple of Literature, it is a very cool bar in an old French Villa. We went during the day when it was quiet but heard good reports of evenings when the rooftop is open, the cocktails are apparently excellent.

San Ga Cafe, 62 Tran Phu, is just past the western end of the Old Quarter and is on the edge of the railway track, there are several places along the side of the track but we chose this one, very cheap beer, friendly service and great track side fun.

Drink

Bia Hoi is unpasteurized draught beer with a low alcohol content and sold in corner bars where a mix of locals and visitors consume this very cheap beer. There are various local brands sold by the bottle along with other brands such as Heineken, San Miguel etc.

We always manage to find new places on each visit and some have become firm favourites, among them Cong Cafe. Polite & Co and The Hill Station, in fact we enjoy the bar scene more in Hanoi more than in Ho Chi Minh.

Craft beer is becoming more and more popular in Vietnam and each city seems to have local favourites although Pasteur Street from Hanoi is particularly well known and is often found in up market restaurants.

Vietnam does produce a wine called Dalat, the ordinary one is like an average table wine, there are some better quality ones in the range these days which are good and reasonably priced particularly the reds. We stuck to imported wines mainly from Australia, Chile and France in restaurants or beer. Imported wine is not ridiculously expensive considering the duty.

Coffee is also a major drink as you would expect from the second largest coffee producing country and there are some lovely cafes to relax in with an iced coffee, very popular, or a regular coffee.

Explore the Old Quarter, the restored Memorial House at 87 P Ma May is well worth a visit. Wander round Hoan Kiem Lake, take a taxi and visit the West Lake and the Tran Quoc Pagoda, also a must is the Temple of Literature. The French District is lovely to wander around as a change from the hustle and bustle of the Old Quarter. There are many souvenir shops but the one at 24 Ta Hien Street is run by a lovely man and his lacquer scenes are very good souvenirs.

Most people who come to Hanoi also visit Halong Bay and it is a must, but do book with a reputable company to ensure a good boat and a well organised trip. Personally I think 2 days and 1 night is enough to see the Bay. If you are lucky enough to stay at the Essence Hotel or any of the same group they will offer to arrange a trip.

You should do research in advance on the various companies, size of boats etc. as booking any that are not in the mid to luxury range risks disappointment in the quality of accommodation, food and service. Also take into account the journey time to the port, this visit we booked Azalea Cruises who use Dinh Vu port which is only a two hour journey from Hanoi. The service level from pick up to drop off was excellent and we felt we saw better views in the area they chose than on our previous visit.
